Iran refuses to acknowledge losses in Syria

Iran Focus

London, 7 May - Iran has been uncannily silent in the aftermath of the April 29 attacks on two Syrian military bases that contained Iranian and allied Shia militia forces, that are suspected to have been carried out by Israel.

The state-controlled media in Iran played down the incident, which provides an interesting insight into the conflict between Iran and Israel: Iran is fine with engaging the Jewish state in low-intensity conflicts and using its proxy Hezbollah against it, but it does not want an all-out war with Israel. Considering how often Iran calls for the destruction of Israel, this is surprising, until you remember that Iran is not equipped for all-out war, and would certainly lose.

London, 19 Apr - Since United States President Donald Trump took office, he has maintained harsh rhetoric against Iran. His actions have been firm and he is taking steps to address Iran’s belligerence. Trump also wants to strengthen the 2015 nuclear deal and has warned the other signatories of the agreement that he will not keep the United States in the deal if he is not satisfied that it is effective enough.

London, 12 Apr - Following the devastating chemical attack in Eastern Ghoutta, Syria, that killed dozens of civilians and injured thousands, we may well see another US strike against Syrian airfields.

In 2017, following a chemical attack on the Syrian people by Bashar Assad’s forces, Donald Trump condemned the dictator on Twitter and ordered 59 Tomahawk missiles to strike Syria’s Shayrat Airfield, where the chemical attack had been launched from.

London, 18 Apr - Faced with yet another cowardly chemical weapons attack, the United States, France and Great Britain vowed to take action. And they did so in the form of a US-led airstrike that caused significant damage to Syrian military sites.

The reaction from this Western alliance sends a big message, not just to Syrian President Bashar al Assad, but also to Iran and Russia. It is a clear signal that the days of appeasement led by former President Barack Obama are over.

London, 11 Apr - The international community is understandably concerned about the chemical weapons attack in Douma by Syria, which left over 40 dead and thousands injured.

This violent attack on civilians – mainly women and children - by the Syria and its allies in Iran, was followed the next day by a missile strike on a Syrian airbase that killed 14, including a number of Iranian fighters.

It is unclear who launched the attack, but some people have blamed Israel, potentially backed by the US, which led to Russian President Vladimir Putin warning of ‘grave consequences’ if the US attacks the Syrian government forces and stationing Russian troops near the Homs airfield. This comes only shortly after Donald Trump promised a ‘forceful’ Western military response to the chemical weapons attack in Douma.
