Iraq-Protests

Iran Focus

London, 15 Sep - The city of Basra endures high unemployment, failed healthcare and education systems, drug processing and smuggling, as well as thousands of landmines from past wars surrounding the city. Brackish water flows through its pipes. Militias – the armed wings of Shia political parties, who fight against ISIS – tyrannize its people. The river is filled with sewage and sickness.

The shared Shiite faith has been used by Iran to exploit Iraq’s wealth rather than build up its people. Many Iraqis are tired of Iran treating Iraq like its own backyard, which culminated in an explosion of fury in Basra this past week. Thousands of citizens took to the streets to demand their rights.

Iraq Protests

Iran Focus

London, 11 Sep - Iran’s meddling in Iraq is making the Iraqi people extremely angry. The people have been protesting against Iran’s interference for months and it was reported last week that Iraqi protesters had set the Iranian consulate in Basra on fire.

The protesters in the Shia Muslim-majority city called on their government to get rid of the Iranian influence from their government and they made their anger heard loud and clear. They are angry about the lack of safe drinking water, the lack of jobs and the lack of electricity, amongst other things. Tens of thousands of people in the city have been hospitalised after drinking contaminated water.

Iran’s-Proxies’-in-Iraq

Iran Focus

London, 5 Sep - For months, Iran-back Iraqi armed factions have been working to develop ballistic missiles that they threaten to use against American forces in the country, according to Shiite commanders and Iraqi security officials.

Iranian proxy forces using improved missile technology in yet another country in the Middle East is concerning to Arab countries and the US. The ballistic missiles that the Houthi militias fired at Saudi Arabia earlier this year were confirmed to have come from Iran, who is also accused of helping Hezbollah build factories in Lebanon to produce similar weapons.

Protesters in Basra set fire to Iranian consulate

Iran Focus

London, 10 Sep - The Iranian consulate in Basra, Iraq, was set fire to by anti-government protesters on Friday, shouting “Iran, Out”, after a week of demonstrations in the southern city turned violent.

Despite the 100+ degrees Fahrenheit temperatures, protesters were calling for an end to Iranian influence in the country, criticising the Iraqi government's dysfunction, and demanding more jobs and better public services.

Thousands of residents in the oil-rich region are living in poverty, have grown sick from contaminated water, and have suffered power outages.

Iran’s interference in Iraq facilitated by presence of ISIS

Iran Focus

London, 17 August - The political situation in Iraq has degraded once again and the Iran is meddling and taking advantage of the turmoil. Again.

The Islamic State group is back and picking up pace. There are thousands of active militants in the country and in Syria. The United States Defense Department believes that there are around thirty thousand Islamic State fighters. This is not far off the number of fighters that it had during its peak three years ago.
