Tehran, Iran, May 13 – Iran has expelled some 85,000 Afghans from its borders over the past three weeks, a senior Iranian official was quoted as saying by the official news agency IRNA on Sunday.

Brigadier General Mohammad-Baqer Zolqadr, Iran’s Deputy Interior Minister for Security, made the announcement in the northern city of Semnan on Saturday. He accused the Afghans of being present in Iran illegally.

The plan to expel “illegal” Afghan refugees from Iran began on April 21.
