Tehran, Iran, Oct. 13 – A metro station in the Iranian capital had to be closed down after water poured in from its rooftop, flooding one of its tunnels, state media reported on Thursday.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, water pouring from a badly-constructed roof flooded Pol Roumi Metro Station between one to one and a half metres in depth.

Road traffic was suspended above the area from where water was entering the station.

No timeline has been set for when the metro station would be up and running.

Tehran’s metro has frequently come under scrutiny for being unsafe and mismanaged. Its construction project was awarded by former President Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani to one of his sons, Mohsen Hashemi. Though the President has never faced official corruption charges, it is widely believed that he had accumulated his multi-billion dollar wealth through misuse of state funds.
