Russia demands US secure diplomatic mission in Iraq

-

AFP: Russia warned the United States on Friday that US forces must ensure the security of Moscow’s diplomatic premises in Iraq, after attackers reportedly fired on the Russian embassy in Baghdad. MOSCOW, Jan 12, 2007 (AFP) – Russia warned the United States on Friday that US forces must ensure the security of Moscow’s diplomatic premises in Iraq, after attackers reportedly fired on the Russian embassy in Baghdad.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had spoken with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice by telephone and “underlined the duty of the American command of international forces to ensure reliable security at our and other diplomatic missions and the inadmissibility of such incidents in the future,” a Russian foreign ministry statement said.

Russian news agencies reported that Moscow’s embassy in Baghdad had twice been fired on with automatic weapons on Wednesday evening, causing structural damage but no injuries.

Moscow has strongly criticised a raid by US forces Thursday on an Iranian office in Kurdish-majority northern Iraq, although the office’s diplomatic status was disputed by Iraqi authorities.
