Tehran, Dec. 22 – Two antique smugglers had their death sentences upheld yesterday by an Islamic revolutionary court in the southern town of Jiroft.

The religious judge, Dadkhoda Sallari, also ordered the confiscation and sale of their personal property to cover the cost of trial.

The men’s identities have yet to be confirmed.

Jiroft, located in Kerman Province, is an archaeological hotspot with many ancient artefacts recently discovered there dating back to 5000 years.

Following the verdict, the cleric announced to “all thieves and smugglers nearby” that the courts in Jiroft will no longer tolerate their crimes and that they would face a similar fate to the two men if they did not abandon their practices.
