MONTREAL – A Montreal filmmaker who was arrested and jailed in Iran says the Canadian consul was never in contact with her while she was behind bars.

Merhnoushe Solouki, a dual French-Iranian citizen, also says there was a lack of courage on the part of the French government. The 38-year-old, who became a permanent Canadian resident in 2004, went to Tehran in December 2006 to film a documentary. Solouki says she was filming in a cemetery in the suburbs of Tehran, where religious minorities were buried, when she was arrested Feb. 19, 2007.

She says she was asked repeatedly during her 11-month imprisonment to fill out a questionnaire which asked if she received any funding from Canada.

Solouki was finally freed last month after her Iranian parents put up their home as a guarantee.
