A lawyer who defended an Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning has gone missing, Amnesty International said last night. Also, two of Mohammad Mostafaei’s relatives have reportedly been detained.

Authorities in Tehran said it would not carry out the stoning against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani for the time being, but the mother of two could still be hanged.

She has been convicted of adultery and other offences.

London-based human rights group Amnesty said Mr Mostafaei was summoned for questioning on Saturday.

He was allowed to go but was then asked to return and Amnesty said he has not been seen since. His wife and her brother have been detained by Iranian authorities, Amnesty say.
