Baghdad, Dec. 10 – Iran and the United States will hold a new round of talks on December 18 over the security situation in Iraq, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said on Monday.

Zebari described the upcoming talks, which are to be attended by officials from Iran, Iraq, and the U.S., a “technical meeting”, adding that the countries would meet at the experts level rather than at the ambassadors level.

Zebari told reporters that he would travel to Damascus later today to meet Syrian officials for talks on security in Iraq.

The talks on December 18 would be the fourth time officials from Tehran and Washington meet to discuss the fate of Iraq.

The three previous rounds of discussions were held on 28 May, 24 July and 6 August.

Washington accuses Iran of backing Shiite militias responsible for much of the daily carnage in Iraq.
