Baghdad, Apr. 08 – Some four tons of illicit drugs imported from Iran were confiscated in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, according to an Iraqi daily.

The Al-Mashreq daily wrote yesterday, “On Wednesday authorities in the southern Iraqi city of Basra announced that security forces had rounded up four tons of cannabis which had been smuggled from Iran”.

“The authorities said that during their operation they confiscated drugs which were discovered in a big truck in eastern Basra, the second largest city in Iraq, 550km southeast of Baghdad. Six people were also arrested”, it said.

The daily said that the current Iraqi government had condemned Iranian authorities for turning a blind eye to the import of drugs and weapons into Iraq.

It added that Iran was the main hub of drug smuggling to Iraq.
