Tehran, Iran, Mar. 13 – The Supreme Commandant of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps said that the United States had failed in its strategy for the Middle East and was “sinking in the Iraq quagmire”, state-run dailies reported on Monday.

“America has been defeated in its first steps to … create a greater Middle East and is sinking in the Iraq quagmire”, Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said.

“On the one hand, the administration in America has been greatly defeated in its political positions and on the other hand, American public opinion has rallied against the warmongering government and the memories of the Vietnam war have resurfaced in the minds of the people of the America”, Safavi said.

He made the comments on Saturday as part of an address to a gathering of commanders of the IRGC’s Air Force.

The IRGC chief said that Iran was becoming a great regional power and that pressures by Washington on the Islamic Republic would have no effect.
