Tehran, Feb. 14 – At least 35 people were killed and 200 more left injured after a fire blaze broke out in a mosque in central Tehran, state-run television reported.

The fire was due to an electrical malfunction which occurred while the Ark Mosque was crowded with worshippers for the major Shiite Muslim festival commemorating the martyrdom of one of the Prophet Mohammad’s grandsons, Hossein, who was slain in battle in the holy Shiite city of Karbala (central Iraq).

Nearby roads were blocked as ambulances and firefighters rushed to the scene.
