Tehran, 23 April (AKI) – Former Tehran police chief, Reza Zarei, who was arrested in a brothel in March, has attempted suicide in prison.

Zarei was reportedly transferred to hospital for urgent treatment after the suicide attempt.

News of the suicide has not been confirmed officially but was published on the Iranian site, Peyknet.

Zarei was found with six naked women when he was arrested in a Tehran brothel last month.

The former police chief was responsible for the moralisation campaign spearheaded by president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The so-called "public security plan" is aimed at enforcing Islamic dress code and fight 'indecent' behavior by young people in the Iranian capital.

The moralisation campaign led by Zarei resulted in the arrest of hundreds of young men and women accused of failing to respect the Islamic code.
