Denmark summons Iran ambassador over violence

Reuters: The Danish government is to summon Iran's ambassador to protest against post-election violence, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Monday.

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – The Danish government is to summon Iran's ambassador to protest against post-election violence, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Monday.

The Czech European Union presidency called upon the bloc's members earlier on Monday to consider summoning the heads of Iran's missions in Europe to protest against the violence following last week's presidential election.

The spokesman said Denmark had asked the Iranian ambassador to report to the foreign ministry, but he said it was not clear when the ambassador would formally receive the Danish protest.

The Czechs made the appeal one day after Iran summoned EU envoys in Tehran to complain about EU criticism of its handling of protests following President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disputed election win.

The unrest in Iran is the most widespread since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which ousted the U.S.-backed shah.
