TEHRAN – Iranian state-owned car maker Saipa on Saturday denied a report that it was interested in buying up the bankrupt British-owned MG Rover, local media reported.

“We were contacted by Rover a month ago. But because of the undetermined situation of the British Rover company, we are not intending to purchase it,” Saipa managing director Ahmad Ghale Bani told the student news agency ISNA.

The agency had earlier reported that Saipa, along with Iran Khodro — the largest car maker in Iran and the Middle East — were considering buying up MG Rover. The report quoted an anonymous senior industry source.

Century-old MG Rover, which has produced the Mini and Jaguar, faces the end of the road after administrators last Friday axed more than 80 percent of its 6,100 workers after a failed tie-up with China’s Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corporation.
