TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran says a magnitude 6.0 earthquake has jolted a sparsely populated remote area in the southeast.

State TV says the quake hit around noon Thursday. It’s the second for the day, after an earlier 5.1 tremor and was followed by a magnitude 4.8 aftershock.

The U.S. Geological Survey put the quake’s magnitude at 5.8, with the epicenter about 680 miles (1,095 kilometres) southeast of Tehran.

Heidar Heidari from Iran’s Red Crescent told state-owned Borna news agency that no casualties were reported. Rescue teams were inspecting the area.

In December, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck the same area, killing seven and injuring 33 people.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experiences at least one slight earthquake every day on average.
