Tehran, Iran, Sep. 16 – A senior Iranian cleric blasted the United States on Friday for calling on the international community to provide aid to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

During the Friday prayers sermon in Tehran, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, head of the powerful Guardian Council, said that the U.S. was effectively gathering aid from across the world while at the same time pouring its resources into “the war against Afghanistan and Iraq”.

“Are you not embarrassed that despite spending so much on the war [in Iraq and Afghanistan”>, you ask the world for help for your hurricane victims?”, Jannati asked the U.S. administration.

“Why do you spend the American people’s money, which should be spent to help the victims, on your presence in Iraq and on fighting that country’s people and government?” the senior cleric said.

“The American power is rotten at the core”, the Guardian Council chief proclaimed, drawing chants of “Death to America” from the crowd.
