Tehran – IRAN appointed a US-trained fighter pilot as its new air force chief, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported today.

General Karim Ghavami replaced General Reza Pardis. IRNA gave no reason for the switch, made by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

General Ghavami, 54, represents the older generation of Iranian air force commanders who fought in the Iran-Iraq war. He has held most major positions in Iran’s air force.

General Ghavami received a master’s degree in defence management from Iran’s Higher Defense University in Tehran after graduating from a US jetfighter training centre in the mid-1970s, IRNA said.
