US attack on Iran is ‘inconceivable’: Britain’s Straw

LONDON – British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said on Thursday it was “inconceivable” that the United States would attack Iran over its nuclear programme and that the world would back such action.

“I don’t see any circumstances in which military action would be justified against Iran full stop,” Straw told BBC radio.

Asked if the world would support US-led military action against Iran, Straw said: “Not only is that inconceivable, but I think the prospect of it happening (US military action) is inconceivable.”

“The United States government have operated internationally and with international cooperation in respect of Iran,” he said.

He was speaking as Iranian and the EU representatives continued talks in Paris aimed at a compromise over Europe’s call for the Islamic Republic to suspend uranium enrichment in order to allay US-led concerns it is secretly developing nuclear weapons.

The United States, which is keeping a low profile on the European initiative, wants the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at a meeting in Vienna on November 25, to take Iran before the UN Security Council for running what it claims is a secret nuclear weapons program.
