Tehran – A 16-year-old boy was sentenced on Saturday to execution by a Tehran court. The boy only identified by his first name Vahid was accused of killing a 24-year old man near the district of Damavand. In court Vahid defended himself and said that he had no intention of killing the man and only did so when he attacked him.
Smoking up 31 fold by female students in Tehran
Tehran – Cigarette smoking by female students in universities throughout Tehran has increased 31 times according to a recent report released by Irans Ministry of Health. The report was based on statistics obtained in Iran over the past five years. It also stated that the total number of cigarettes smoked in Iran over the past year was approximately 54 billion.
Earthquake jolts western Iran
Pol Dokhtar – An earthquake, measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, jolted the Iranian province of Lorestan (western Iran) last night. Tehran Universitys geographical studies group announced that the brunt of the quake was felt in the town of Pol Dokhtar. No casualties have so far been reported.
Unpaid wages spark off demonstration
Shahroud – Workers at Azarakhsh factory in the town of Shahroud (northeastern Iran) Saturday demonstrated outside the towns civil services bureau accusing officials of not paying their wages. Azarashkh factory produces car parts.
One of the demonstrators said that workers had not received their wages for over three months and that their families were finding it impossible to cope over the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
