Tehran, Dec. 13 – Workers and local residents in the northern Iranian city of Amol clashed with the security forces, leaving scores injured and a number of security vehicles destroyed.

Workers from Amol’s Textile Factory demonstrated outside the local governor’s office after the factory claimed bankruptcy whilst owing the workers back-pay from previous months, according to those present on the scene.

One eyewitness said, “At lunchtime the workers gathered and soon started a rally. Many local people started to join their ranks and shortly after the security forces rushed in”.

According to a second witness violence erupted when the security forces attempted to arrest some of the marchers as well as seal off the area to prevent more from joining ranks.

The same person stated that a number of security vehicles were set on fire as people attacked government buildings in protest to the clampdown.
