At least 17 rebels were killed in the clashes in West Azerbaijan Province near the border with Turkey.

Local Revolutionary Guards commander Colonel Jalil Babazadeh told the official news agency IRNA that four members of the security forces were also killed.

The reports did not clarify when the clashes took place or which group the rebels belonged to; however, the Kurdish group Pejak has engaged in armed activity against the government in recent months.

On Saturday, the Revolutionary Guards announced that it had killed another 17 rebels in the region.
