London, May 10 – Outgoing British Prime Minister Tony Blair accused al-Qaeda and Iran of backing terrorism in Iraq.

“What is happening in Iraq is essentially that al-Qaeda on the one hand and elements of the Iranian regime on the other are backing terrorism in that country, the purpose of which is to destroy the prospect of that country being able to have the democracy its people have voted for and want.”, Blair told Members of Parliament during Prime Minister’s Question Time at the House of Commons on Wednesday.

He added that under such circumstances it was “extremely important” that British troops in Iraq were fully support at home.

Lawmakers in the UK should “rebut” the idea that people were dying in Iraq as a result of the activities of U.S.-led troops, he said. “They are dying as a result of the activities of terrorists, and our job should be to stand up to them and not give in to them”.
