London, Jul. 16 – The U.S. military hinted on Sunday that Iran was sponsoring rocket and mortar attacks in Baghdad.

Coalition troops and Iraqi security forces have experienced an increase in the number of rocket and mortar attacks, U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Mark I. Fox, a Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF-I) spokesman, told reporters on Sunday. Four mortar and rocket attacks hit in Doura and New Baghdad and nine others hit in other Baghdad neighbourhoods on July 13.

“These indiscriminate attacks are perfect examples of the nature of this brutal enemy”, Fox said. “MNF-I deplores the loss of innocent Iraqis caused by the indirect fire attack by Iranian-sponsored secret cells with the Jaysh al-Mahdi”, he said, referring to firebrand Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army.
