Tehran, Iran, Nov. 20 – Iran’s suspected nuclear weapons file will not be referred to the United Nations Security Council at a meeting of the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday, a top Majlis official said on Sunday.

Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a former deputy foreign minister, said that he did not expect Tehran to be sent to the top UN security body unless the United States stepped up its pressure on the European Union. Britain, France and Germany have been negotiating with the Iranian government on behalf of the European Union since 2003. Iran brought the talks to an end by resuming suspended activities at a nuclear plant in the central city of Isfahan.

Boroujerdi said that the IAEA board might demand once again that Tehran suspend its nuclear activities at the Isfahan Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF), but he ruled out Iran’s referral to the Security Council which could impose trade and economic sanctions.
