Political prisoners in Tehran’s Evin Prison have staged a hunger strike on the eve of the anniversary of July 9 uprising and in protest against a new wave of suppression and widespread arrest of university students and youths in Iran.

In an attempt to prevent university students and the youths protests on the anniversary of July 9 uprising, the Iranian authorities have launched a crackdown in Iranian cities, particularly in Tehran, in the past few weeks.

The government has increased dramatically the presence of Revolutionary Guards, security forces and agents of intelligence ministry agencies in Tehran and other major cities and in universities.

Students at several universities throughout Iran have also joined the hunger strike in protest against the government crackdown.

In solidarity with students and hunger-strikers, Iranians residing abroad will stage demonstrations in 15 major cities in Europe, the U.S., Canada and Australia.
