Special units of the State Security Forces launched a new campaign in Mashad, provincial capital of the northeastern province of Khorrasan, to crack down on young people. Plainclothes security agents and truncheon-wielding paramilitaries are marauding the city’s main streets and squares. They arrest young girls and boys for not observing strict dress codes and put them in coaches with built-in cages. The security forces are authorized to use force if anyone resists arrest.

Those arrested are put on summary trial while still in the coach. After a few minutes, each one is given a sentence. Eye witnesses and local residents say several busloads of young people have been transferred to detention centers in the past few days.
