Tehran, Iran, Mar. 04 – Hundreds of coal miners from the northern province of Gilan are holding a strike inside Sangroud Mine, located near the town of Rudbar, in protest to not receiving their salaries for more than a year and the failure of the government to resolve the issue.

The workers said that they went to the Office of Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last week to protest their overdue salaries but to no avail.

Fellow miners and their families have joined the protesters, according to the state-run news agency ILNA.

The coal miners claim not to have received 13 months of salaries.

They have vowed that they will not abandon their demonstration until their situation is adequately resolved.

Ahmadinejad had run in the presidential campaign on a platform of purging corruption, mismanagement, and poverty in society but Iran experts say that workers in Iran have since become in a greater state of financial flux.
