London, Apr. 28 – A senior United States official accused Iran on Friday of supporting rejectionist groups and attempting to destabilise the Middle East.

“The Iranian Regime has dangerous activities and goals in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon and is trying to use certain Palestinian groups based in Syria to gain control of [Palestinian land”> and carry out terrorist operations”, United States Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Welch said in an interview with the London-based Arab daily al-Hayat.

Earlier this month, Iran pledged to give the Palestinian Authority 50 million dollars in aid.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki announced the contribution, which will go to the Hamas-led government, during a pro-Palestinian conference in Tehran.

The U.S. and European Union have cut off financial aid to the Palestinian Authority after Hamas won the elections.

Hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently cited the victory of the Islamist group in the elections as a sign of the rise of Islamism in the world.
