Tehran, Aug 15 – The editor of the influential state-owned daily, Kayhan, made a clear link between the current turmoil in Iraq and the developments on the internal political scene in Iran, noting that mounting problems facing the U.S. in Iraq have silenced those who were hoping for “regime change” in Iran.

“If today the paid or unpaid agents and lackeys of the White House in Iran and abroad have fallen into silence and if those who were trying to convince the people that “the winds of liberal democracy will inevitably blow across our country, too” have become discredited, this is in no small measure thanks to the heroic resistance being put up by Moslems, and especially a specific group of supporters of Velayat (meaning Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei) in Iraq,” wrote Hossein Saffar Harandi.

“Let us all pray for the defenders of the shrine of Imam Ali (in Najaf) and of all the pure lands of Islam,” he added.

Kayhan reflects the views of Khamenei and the senior clerical figures around him, who clearly feel that the growing conflict in Iraq has been working to their advantage on the internal political scene in Iran.
