Iran Focus: Tehran, Iran, Jun. 26 – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed on Sunday the Islamic Republic’s former Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi as the chairman of the newly-established Strategic Council for Foreign Relations, according to a statement carried by the official news agency. Tehran, Iran, Jun. 26 – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed on Sunday the Islamic Republic’s former Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi as the chairman of the newly-established Strategic Council for Foreign Relations, according to a statement carried by the official news agency.

Kharrazi was tasked with setting up the council to assist in making major decisions and to seek new horizons in Iran’s foreign relations.

Among other officials appointed to the council is Ali Akbar Velayati, Kharrazi’s predecessor as Foreign Minister for 16 years and currently Khamenei’s top international affairs aide.

Others in the council include Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani, Iran’s former Defence Minister; Mohammad Shariatmadari, Iran’s former Commerce Minister; and Mohammad-Hossein Taromi.

They were appointed by the Supreme Leader to serve on the council for five-year terms.
