White House says Iran has not met its obligations

Reuters: The White House said on Thursday that a U.N. watchdog report shows that Iran has not met its obligations to halt its nuclear fuel program. WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House said on Thursday that a U.N. watchdog report shows that Iran has not met its obligations to halt its nuclear fuel program.

Gordon Johndroe, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said the U.S. government had just received a copy of the report and that officials were studying it.

“An initial quick read is that Iran has not met its obligations under (U.N. Security Council resolution) 1737 and that’s disappointing. We’ll take a look at the report and discuss it with our allies,” he said.

The Security Council had commissioned the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to report on whether Iran had heeded a 60-day deadline for it to stop nuclear enrichment-related activity.

President George W. Bush insists he wants to resolve the impasse over Iran’s nuclear program with diplomacy. Washington believes Iran wants to develop a nuclear weapon, a charge Tehran denies.
