London, Jan. 22 – Britain’s Foreign Secretary David Miliband welcomed an agreement Tuesday by the Permanent Five members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany on the contents of a new Security Council resolution on Iran regarding its suspected nuclear weapons program.

“I am very pleased that the Foreign Ministers of Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Russia and China meeting today in Berlin have agreed to the contents of a new UN Security Council resolution on Iran’s nuclear program. The new resolution will build on resolutions 1696, 1737 and 1747”, Miliband said in a statement to the press.

“Today’s meeting was united, constructive and determined. We urge Iran to respond positively to the repeated requests from the international community to suspend its enrichment related and reprocessing activities and to take advantage of the far-reaching offer of economic and scientific as well as political cooperation that would result from suspension of these activities. A positive choice by Iran holds the prospect of real progress for its citizens. Confrontation with the international community will only further isolate Iran and hurt Iran’s citizens”, he said.

“The agreement today is a signal of shared determination to work against the dangers of nuclear profileration and for an inclusive international system based on clear rules and responsibilities”, he added.

The 15-nation Security Council has imposed two sets of sanctions on Tehran for its refusal to halt its uranium enrichment activities.
