Tehran, Iran, Jan. 26 – United States President George W. Bush said on Thursday that Iran, as a “non-transparent regime” that threatens the security the world, must not be allowed to have nuclear weapons know-how.

Bush also expressed his opposition to enrichment of uranium inside Iran, saying that Tehran may divert the program to develop nuclear weapons.

“I don’t believe non-transparent regimes that threaten the security of the world should be allowed to gain the technologies necessary to make a weapon”, Bush told a press conference at the White House.

The U.S president said that he supported a Russian proposal aimed at resolving the international standoff over Tehran’s sensitive nuclear work.

Bush insisted that Tehran should only be allowed to carry out nuclear activities under the condition that the material used to power its plants be manufactured in Russia and delivered to Iran under the watch of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and its waste be picked up by the Russians and returned to Russia. “I think that is a good plan. The Russians came up with the idea, and I support it”.

The U.S president said that Iranian officials had admitted that they wanted nuclear weapons. “And it’s not in the world’s interest that they have a weapon”.

He went on to say that the Iranian government’s “desires for a weapon are unacceptable”.

Asked whether he supported moves in Congress to hasten regime change in Iran, Bush said that Washington will support freedom movements all around the world.
