UK sees “nothing new” in Iran’s nuclear stance

-

Reuters: Britain said it saw nothing new in Iran’s position on a disputed nuclear programme at a meeting with Britain, France and Germany on Wednesday. LONDON (Reuters) – Britain said it saw nothing new in Iran’s position on a disputed nuclear programme at a meeting with Britain, France and Germany on Wednesday.

“We detected nothing new in the Iranian position,” a British foreign ministry spokesman said after representatives of Iran and the three European countries met in Moscow.

He said the next step would be a report by International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei to the United Nations’ Security Council at the end of April.

The officials from Britain, France and Germany met their Iranian counterparts at the suggestion of Iran and Russia to listen to Iranian views, the British spokesman said.

The Iranian delegation included Javad Vaeedi, deputy chief nuclear negotiator.

The meeting came amid heightened tensions following Iran’s declaration last week that it had enriched uranium to a level used in power stations amid Western suspicions Tehran wants to develop a nuclear bomb, a charge the Islamic Republic denies.

The U.N. Security Council has demanded that Iran suspend uranium enrichment by the end of April but senior officials from the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany failed to agree on next steps at a Moscow meeting on Tuesday.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said earlier that an Iranian delegation had headed to Moscow and that the team would “express Iran’s clear stance” and discuss possible solutions.
