Iran may hold nuclear talks with Europeans, Ahmadinejad says

Bloomberg: Iran may hold talks with European nations to try to solve the dispute over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today, the state-run Iranian News Agency IRNA reported. July 18 (Bloomberg) — Iran may hold talks with European nations to try to solve the dispute over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said today, the state-run Iranian News Agency IRNA reported.

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana last month presented Iran with a package of incentives aimed at persuading Iran to give up the enrichment of uranium. Iran has yet to officially respond to the package, and the United Nations Security Council next week is due to discuss possible sanctions.

The U.S. accuses Iran of trying to develop a nuclear bomb in violation of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran maintains the program is aimed at generating electricity.

Ahmadinejad said today that access to the nuclear fuel cycle is an “inalienable” right for Iran, and that the U.S. shouldn’t “add to current problems,” according to IRNA. The news agency didn’t say if the leader gave a timeframe for the talks with European nations. He spoke in an address to the Iranian Students’ Parliament.
