London, Aug. 03 – Russia called on Iran to comply with a United Nations Security Council resolution adopted earlier this week demanding that it freeze all uranium enrichment activities.

“As for the nature of UN Security Council’s resolutions, it should be borne in mind that under article 25 of the UN Charter all members of the organisation agree to abide by Security Council resolutions and implement them”, the Russian Foreign Ministry told the news agency Itar-Tass.

We are hoping that the Iranian side will respond properly to the calls addressed to it and no extra action by the UN Security Council will be required”, it said.

On Monday, the Security Council passed resolution 1696 which expressed “serious concern” at Iran’s refusal to comply with the demands of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and ordered Tehran to suspend its uranium enrichment activities by August 31 or face possible sanctions.

Iran has rejected the legally-binding resolution as illegal.
