Tehran, Iran, Sep. 10 – Iran rejected on Sunday suspension of uranium enrichment as an “issue of the past”.

“Suspension is an issue of the past. We will not return to the past”, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi told reporters during his weekly press conference.

“We want talks without any preconditions”, Asefi said.

Secretary-General of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani was meeting European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Vienna on Sunday in an attempt to salvage a deal over the standoff.

“We have questions which they must answer”, Asefi said.

The Security Council adopted Resolution 1696 on July 31 demanding that Tehran suspend all its uranium enrichment activities by August 31 or face the threat of sanctions.

Tehran missed the deadline and has consistently vowed never to abandon uranium enrichment.

The chief of the UN nuclear watchdog Mohammad ElBaradei reported on August 31 that Tehran had not suspended its uranium enrichment activities and had blocked IAEA inspectors from inspecting its nuclear facilities.
