Tehran, Iran, Dec. 09 – A senior Iranian cleric vowed on Friday that the Islamic Republic would never retreat in the international standoff over its controversial nuclear program.

“The Iranian nation is standing firm over its right to obtain peaceful nuclear energy, and it will not retreat”, Ahmad Khatami told Friday prayers worshippers in Tehran. His remarks were aired on state television.

Khatami described the meetings of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany (P5+1) over Tehran’s nuclear activities as “fruitless”.

“Iran is adamant in the complete realisation of its rights”.

Addressing the P5+1, Khatami said, “Be certain that you will get nowhere by issuing mischievous resolutions against Iran”.

“You will not be able to overcome the great and vast will of the Iranian nation”, he said.
