Iran Focus: London, Jul. 10 – Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed a top commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as the country’s new police chief, the state-run news agency reported. In a decree that was read out on the state radio, Ayatollah Khamenei said the police forces’ top priority was “to create security all over the country at a level worthy of the Islamic Republic”. Brigadier General Ismail Ahmadi Moghaddam, the number two in the paramilitary Bassij and commander of the force in Greater Tehran, is a long-time ally of President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Iran Focus: Tehran, Iran, Jul. 10 – Female students clashed with security agents in a Tehran university after a heated dispute over Iran’s austere dress regulations for women. The students from Tehran’s Industrial Aeronautic University defied agents of the State Security Forces when the latter harassed them on campus and tried to arrest them for violating the dress
regulations.

Iran Terror Database: Iran Terror has learnt Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (VEVAK) is sending to Paris a cell that has been trained in Tehran to carry out a misinformation attack against the opposition National Council of Resistance. The new operation is aimed at diverting the current world focus on the past activities of Iran’s new ultra-conservative President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is suspected of being among the interrogators of U.S. hostages in Tehran in 1979 and a key player in the assassination in Vienna of a prominent Kurdish dissident.

Iran Focus: Tehran, Iran, Jul. 09 – Half of Iran’s 140,000-strong nurses are unemployed and searching for a job, according to the head of the Nurses Organisation of Iran. Speaking to local reporters on the sidelines of a nurses’ conference in the city of Semnan (eastern Iran), Qazanfar Mirzabaigi said, “Half of them [140,000 nurses”> are employed and between 65,000 to 70,000 are unemployed and seeking employment”.
