Iran survey: 92 percent of voters to stay away from presidential polls

Iran Focus: Tehran, Jun. 01 – A nationwide survey conducted by an Iranian opposition group showed widespread voter apathy in Iran’s upcoming June 17 presidential elections.
The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) said in a press release that a survey of 1,730 adults eligible to vote showed that 92 percent of voters intend to boycott the elections. The survey was based on interviews conducted between May 27 and May 30, 2005.

AP: An Iranian opposition group screened a gruesome video Wednesday showing two men being hanged before crowds in Iran, saying the executions were punishment for adultery. With hundreds gathered to watch, nooses hanging from lowered cranes were placed around the men’s heads. The arm of each crane was then straightened, killing the men and leaving their bodies dangling.

Hardline Iranian MPs renew pressure over nuclear suspension

AFP: Iran’s hardline parliament renewed its pressure on the reformist government Wednesday to end a suspension of its nuclear programme, saying negotiations with the Europeans were merely wasting time. A letter to President Mohammad Khatami, signed by 175 deputies in the 290-seat Majlis, called on the government “to apply the law passed by parliament and approved by the Guardians Council as quickly as possible.”

Iran hangs three Afghans convicted of rape

AFP: Three Afghans convicted of raping an Iranian women and stealing a sheep have been hanged in the southern town of Ravar in Kerman province, the state news agency IRNA reported Wednesday. The three men — identified as Nazar Mohammad, Kheyrollah, and Besmellah — were reported to have been in the Islamic republic illegally. Their crime was committed in December, the local judiciary was quoted as saying.

executions carried out in Iran was screened in London by
exiled dissidents today.
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) showed a 10-minute video which they said depicted the capital punishment of three young men for adultery. The three were hanged by being lifted off the ground by a mechanical crane mounted on a flat-bed lorry.

the shooting in cold blood of a 20-year-old man by a senior official of Iran’s paramilitary police, the State Security Forces, at an
underground railway station in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran.
The murder, witnessed by hundreds of rush-hour commuters,
sparked clashes between angry protesters and security forces in several neighbourhoods of Karaj.

New York Times: Iran said Tuesday that it had successfully tested a solid-fuel motor for its medium-range ballistic missile known as Shahab 3, raising concerns that it could reach its enemies, including American forces in the region and Israel, with more precision. Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani told state television the test was a success but did not say when it had been carried out.
