United Nations, United States – The U.N. General Assembly Monday expressed concern at continuing human rights violations in Iran on the reported eve of an execution by stoning.

Non-governmental organizations said it was the 52nd time a body of the world organization condemned Tehran’s human rights record.

The measure — passed 69-55, with 51 abstentions — expressed “concern at the continuing violations of human rights” in Iran, and called for, among other things, implementation of judicial reform, an abolishment of torture and execution by stoning and for establishment of freedom of religion or belief.

“This resolution is being passed on the eve of the stoning of Hajieh Esmailvand in the city of Jolfa, Iran,” said the Women’s Freedom Forum.

Hajieh was originally sentenced to five years in prison to be followed by hanging for having a sexual affair with a then 17-year-old boy. He has also been sentenced to death, Amnesty International reported.

The Iranian Supreme Court reportedly suspended the prison sentence so she could be immediately executed and changed the death by hanging sentence to death by stoning.
