London, Jul. 09 – Britain’s new Foreign Secretary David Miliband has issued a warning to Iran that it “doesn’t have the right to set off a nuclear arms race in the Middle East”.

Miliband, who was appointed as Foreign Secretary by Britain’s new Prime Minister Gordon Brown, told the Financial Times that the Brown administration will not soften Britain’s policy on Iran.

He warned that the UK would press ahead with a third United Nations Security Council resolution that tightened sanctions on Iran, if necessary. “We are ready to work with our partners on a third resolution, we think it’s very, very important that the international community remains clear and united on this issue”, he said.

The Iranian regime “doesn’t have the right to undermine the stability of its neighbours”, he said.

Asked whether he thought Tehran was complicit in attacks on British soldiers in Basra, southern Iraq, Miliband told the FT, “Any evidence of Iranian engagement there is to be deplored. [Iran”> does not have the right to be a force of instability”.
