Tehran, Jan. 31 – A worker from Iran’s “Foumanat Textiles” factory attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself inside the factory but was prevented when a fellow worker cut the rope around his neck.

Ahmad Agahi, the spokesperson for workers in the factory based in the town of Fouman (northern Gilan province), told a state-run news agency yesterday that poverty and social pressures were what brought the man to commit suicide.

“Workers have been toiling for ten months without pay. At the same time an investor under the pretext of privatisation has pocketed all the investments. After much complaining no official has given an answer to this worker. What do you expect this worker to do”, he said.

Foumanat Textiles was the scene of clashes between workers and State Security Forces last week after a demonstration spontaneously erupted in protest to authorities’ lack of action in regards to the workers’ ten-month back-pay.

SSF agents were reported to have raided the factory, attacking employees, to prevent further outbursts against the state.

“Last Saturday some six workers from this factory were left injured from head to toe during clashes with State Security Forces, and a number of them had to be transferred to hospital”, Agahi added.
