ImageMOSCOW (AFP) — Russia will decide whether to deliver sophisticated S-300 air defence systems to Iran based on the "international situation," a government source was quoted as saying Wednesday.

"The S-300 systems have not yet been delivered within the framework of the contract concluded two years ago. However the contract itself continues to be fufilled," the unnamed source in the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation, which oversees Russian arms sales, told RIA-Novosti news agency.

"The further implementation of the contract depends in large part on the developing international situation and the decision of the country's leaders," the source said, in a report also carried by Interfax.

The sale of the S-300 air defence systems would likely anger the United States, which accuses Iran of seeking to develop a nuclear weapon and has never ruled out an attack on the country's atomic facilities.
