ImageTEHRAN (AFP) — Iran is to release on bail around 20 people accused of post-election violence, including top reformists and an Iranian-American scholar, the official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday.

Among those to be released "soon", the agency said, is Iranian-American scholar Kian Tajbakhsh, and reformist politicians Mohammed Ali Abtahi, Mohammad Atrianfar, Shahab Tabatabaei, Saeed Shariati and Abdollah Momeni.

IRNA, quoting an informed judiciary source, said the interrogation of the group was complete and they would be freed on bail. It did not specify the date of their expected releases.

The 20 were among hundreds of Iranians arrested for allegedly playing a part in triggering the unrest that rocked Tehran after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in June 12 elections.

Abtahi is a former chief of staff for ex-Iranian president Mohammad Khatami, while Atrianfar is a member of the reformist Executives of Construction group which was founded by allies of former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani.

Rafsanjani is a close supporter of Iranian opposition groups who continue to reject Ahmadinejad's re-election, saying the poll was massively rigged.
