ImageTEHRAN (AFP) – Iran has granted bail to an aide to defeated presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi who was arrested in the aftermath of Iran's disputed presidential vote, the Mehr news agency reported on Saturday.

"Morteza Alviri has been bailed by the court," an unnamed senior judiciary official was quoted as saying.

Alviri, Tehran's mayor from 1999-2001, was an advisor to Karroubi, the reformist cleric opposition leader who rejected the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the June 12 poll, alleging massive vote rigging.

Alviri, arrested in early September, represented Karroubi on a committee to deal with the situation of the country's post-election detainees, some of whom were tortured and raped according to reports highlighted by Karroubi.

Ahmadinejad's re-election triggered widespread protests in Tehran and security forces arrested about 4,000 people.

Iranian authorities say at least 30 people were killed in clashes between protesters and security forces while the opposition puts the death toll at more than 70.
