ImageTEHRAN, Iran (AP) – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says efforts by the West to halt Iran's nuclear program will not bear fruit.

The Thursday remarks by Ahmadinejad were made during a ceremony marking the inauguration of a dam in southwestern Iran. They were carried live by state television.

Addressing the West, he said: "Rest assured that your efforts will be fruitless."

The Unites States and its allies, including Israel, are pushing for a new round of sanctions against Iran because they fear that its nuclear program is geared toward making weapons. Iran denies the charge.

Ahmadinejad also urged the West to stop supporting Israel.
