Tehran, May 21 – A senior Iranian commander boasted of Iran’s ability to deploy smart weapons along the country’s borders.
Iranian Army Ground Forces commander, Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan, pointed to recent breakthroughs in domestically-manufactured weaponry as a sign of Iran’s ability to use ground forces in a potential attack.
“Our enemies may have a good air force, navy or advanced missiles but in order to attain victory they will need ground troops,” he said on Thursday.
“This is why we have identified all [of Iran’s] borders and we have deployed troops there, and in some areas where troop deployment is impossible, we are using remote-controlled weapons that have very sensitive sensors,” he added.
“From a tactical vantage point, we have already determined the type of forces and weapons we will be using and we are ready to implement the tactics soon,” Pourdastan said.
It was unclear from Pourdastan’s comments whether the remote-controlled weaponry was of a similar kind to the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) which the U.S.-led force in Afghanistan blames Tehran for providing to militias in attacks against Coalition troops.
Iran has long been accused of supplying and training militias in Afghanistan, which has lead to the death of hundreds of Coalition troops.
