London, Aug. 01 – Anti-riot units and Special Forces barged into Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison after learning that prisoners in Ward 350 had staged a mass hunger strike, the Arabic-language satellite channel, Al-Arabiya, reported on Sunday.

Human rights activists have urged the UN Secretary General and human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, to intervene to save the lives of the prisoners.

A prominent political prisoner in Ward 350, Jafar Kazemi, 47, is facing imminent execution as Iran’s Court of Appeals upheld his death sentence after he was charged with ‘Moharebeh’ (waging war on God). Kazemi’s son, Behrouz, is in Camp Ashraf, Iraq, home to members of the main Iranian opposition group, the People’s Mojahedin Organisation of Iran.
